Auguste Salnave Philippe

Auguste Salnave Philippe

He found his artistic vocation late in life, abandoning his career as a lawyer at the age of 51 to paint full-time. He developed a style reminiscent of that of Henri Rousseau, whose work he clearly admired, producing often wildly inventive pictures such as jungle scenes populated by African animals deriving more from his imagination than from reality. His images include fearful hybrid creatures from Haitian folklore shown stalking the jungle, as well as carnival scenes and pictures of market-places.
