Company history
In 1966, when Georges S. Nader decided to open the art gallery that would bear his name, he had accumulated years of experience in selling art, in a well known and prestigious department store in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Early on, he began collecting and as his aesthetic taste was developing, he came to realize that works of art, unlike precision watches and fine porcelain, has a life of their own and therefore should be dealt with in other ways.
There were very few galleries in Haiti at the time. Paintings were then mostly sold in souvenir shops along side handicrafts. Nader , with a very personal and innovative approach, went all the way to reestablish this art's prestige. Not only did he show the finest but more over, he looked to make public opinion more aware of the evolution of Haitian art and its ever increasing importance worldwide. He did so with the support of the press, through publications and through regularly scheduled exhibitions. His efforts very soon paid off. Haitian art that for the most part was exported, began developing a local clientele. With time, this clientele grew in number and , by the late seventies, Haitian collectors practically dominated the market. Haitian and foreign collectors alike have since relied on Nader's reputation and his integrity. Regularly, they sought his advise to guide them in the collecting process.
Expanding rapidly, Galerie Nader needed to have branches outside of Port-au-Prince. The involvement of his family soon allowed the opening of annexes in Jacmel (south-east of Port-au-Prince), in Petion ville (a suburb of Port-au-Prince), In Santo Domingo R.D., in New York and in Miami. the name Nader justly became closely associated with Haitian art.
Then came the time when Georges S. Nader decided to devote himself to making his most cherished dream come true: the Musée d'Art Nader. for years, he has collected works by Haiti's renowned artists, often buying at auctions abroad major paintings that he felt should be repatriated. When the Museum opened in 1992, it had the world's most important and exclusive collection of Haitian art.
Upon retiring as an art dealer, Georges S. Nader handed on
the torch to Georges Jr. a graduate from New-York University, who then directed
the Petion ville branch. At that time, Georges Jr. had turned his
establishment into the largest art gallery of the Caribbean. Following in his
father's footsteps, he applied himself to promote Haitian art abroad while
giving the necessary support to talented local contemporary artists.
One person exhibitions are regularly held and contacts with the press are
systematically created for the benefit of the artists and the public as well.
In conjunction with the Nader Museum, an educational program was established to
improve the public's critical judgment. In the comfortable setting of the
Nader gallery, it has become customary for collectors and art lovers to meet
their favorite artists and share their views and artistic concerns.
As part of the institution's promotional efforts, Galerie Nader in Miami moved to its new space in Coral Gables, directed by Myriam F. Nader and by her brother John Georges Nader. Widely acclaimed by the local press, the Miami gallery has held three major exhibitions since its opening in 2003. It has a most interesting program for the coming season. Coral Gables (City Beautiful ) is the latest host of the Nader magic as Galerie Nader presents the finest paintings, sculpture, voodoo flags and books of Haitian Art. Custom framing is also available to better serve its clientele.
Keeping up with the technological progress, Galerie Nader now operates this website where works of the highest quality are offered and where information on Haitian art is available.
