BIOGRAPHY Bigaud, Wilson Wilson Bigaud was born on January 29th 1931 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He is considered as one of the great masters of Haitian art. In 1946 after staring out as a sculptor, Dewitt Peters discouraged him in this medium .He began then to paint under the direction of Maurice Borno after enrolling at the Art Center. In 1950 He won second prize at the International Exhibition in Washington with his canvas entitled “Paradise” which belong today to the collection of the Museum of Modern art in New York. He is most well known for his mural, “The Wedding at Cana”, painted in 1950 and 1951 he worked on the walls of the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Between 1957 and 1961, Bigaud suffered a series of nervous breakdowns. He stopped painting for quite a long while. According to Dewitt Peter, Bigaud was obsessed by the fear of losing his gift and several of his friends said that he had made a pact with a houngan (voodoo priest) to preserve his talent. He is definitely one of the major figures of Haitian art. He is represented in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the Nader’s art Galleries and Nader’s Art Museum in Haiti and Florida.
